POLITICAL SYSTEM

Chile is a democratic republic ruled by the prevailing Political Constitution (1980). Its political system is formed by three powers: Executive (chaired by the President of the Republic) Legislative (Senate and House of Representatives) and Judicial (Courts of law).

ECONOMY

Chile is a high ranked emerging economy in the Latin America region and one of the best acknowledged worldwide.

Diverse international organizations have recognized the country’s sustained economic growth, as well as its progress regarding social development. Actually, in 2010, Chile was the first South American nation to become member of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD).

Fiscal discipline constitutes an important part of the Chilean economy solid foundations. Fiscal accounts in the country have remained stable through time and economic annual growth in the last three years has been in average 3.8%. Annual inflation in December 2015 was 4.4%.

Nowadays, Chile has 25 trade agreements with 64 markets, representing 63.3 % of the world population and 85.3 % of global GDP.

POLITICAL SYSTEM

Colombia is a Unitarian republic with political centralization and administrative decentralization, governed by the applicable political Constitution of 1991 and is divided into three branches: the executive, the legislative and the judicial branch. The President serves as both head of state and head of government. The Republic Congress is a bicameral parliament composed of the Senate and the Chamber of Representatives. The Colombian judicial system includes the Constitutional Court, the Supreme Justice Court, the Council of State and Superior Council of Judicature.

ECONOMY

For its stability and significant growth, Colombia has emerged as one of the countries with greater economic stability in the region. In the past six years has grown on average above 4 % which, coupled with a conducive business environment, qualified human talent, incentives and quality of life, make it an excellent place to invest. Colombia currently has trade agreements that allow the country to have preferential access to about 1,500 million consumers in major markets.

POLITICAL SYSTEM

Peru is a democratic republic, governed by the current Constitution (December 19th, 1993). It is organized around three branches of government: executive, headed by the President of the Republic; legislative, with a 130-seat single chamber; and judicial, headed by a Supreme Court.

ECONOMY

The Peruvian economy has grown an average of 5.9 % annually over the past decade due in part to the increase of private investment , especially in the mining sector, which accounts for over 60 % of Peru ‘s total exports .

The country has an exchange rate slightly appreciated and, by 2016 the Central Bank expects inflation will be 2.9 %, the lowest in Latin America.

The rapid expansion of Peru and investment have helped to reduce national poverty rate by 33 percentage points between 2005 and 2015 .

Peru has a wide range of important mineral resources found in mountainous and coastal areas, as well as excellent fishing resources in their coastal waters. Among its main trading partners are: China, USA, Canada and Japan.

Know about the Observer Countries of the Pacific Alliance

Guidelines on the participation of observer countries of the Pacific Alliance

  • Non-member countries may participate as observers according to the provisions established by the Council of Ministers, that is sharing the principles and objectives set out in the Framework Agreement of the Pacific Alliance.
  • Requesting the Pro Tempore Presidency to be Observer; the decision is made by the members and communicated to the applicant countries.
  • Observer countries may participate in meetings to which they are invited by consensus among the Member Countries, and they only have the right to speak but not to vote.
  • If an observer country has free trade agreements with at least half of the member countries, they may request to be a candidate to become a member of the Pacific Alliance.
  • From the date of the application acceptance to be eligible, the Observer Country must comply, no later than one year, with the conditions to start the acceptance process. After that period, the Council of Ministers may grant a new term and make recommendations. Costa Rica and Panama are observer countries that are already considered candidates to be Member Countries.
  • The Observer Country nature will be retained if the applicant country remains committed to the principles, objectives and work of the Alliance, if it is not revoked by the Council of Ministers, and if the Observer Country does not waive it or becomes a Member Country.
  • Member Countries may convene by consensus to invited countries to attend meetings and instances.
